Salvias that are fairly dormant in summer,  i.e. not putting on new growth because it is so hot and dry, usually flower in spring.       Munzii, leucophylla, clevelandii are some bulky Californians which flower in October.   These salvias also hybridise a lot so it can be difficult to know them apart unless you are very familiar with them.
